How Wooden Crates Are Made

The first step is to determine the type of wood you want to make your box. Cedar and pine are popular choices, and pine wood is probably a little easier to work with. To make a box, you will need:

  • (12) 1×4 board three feet long
  • (12) 1×4 board two feet long

Place a portion of the 2×4 on a flat surface. Then place (6) of the three legs 1×4 into a 2×4. Make sure your edges are flush with the outer edges of the 2×4. You can also buy wooden crates online through https://www.palletsexpress.com.au/wooden-crates/

Now you put together 1×4 and 2×4. I recommend 1 1/2 inch wood screws for this. Repeat the above steps on the other side of the box.

Connect all parties

Now it’s time to connect the two sides. To do this, rotate the two 1×4 legs at the ends of the 2×4.

To complete the floor you will need (6) three feet 1×4 and (4) two feet 1×4. Place the three planks of feet on the open side of the box, making sure the edges of each plank are flush with the outside.

Then place (1) on the two long plank legs at the ends and then secure them to the respective planks and finally to the ends of the 2×4. I recommend a 1 “screw for this step. Repeat the same steps on the other end, finishing adding the two remaining planks in the center for stability and support.

Completion

You will then need to measure the inner edge of the box before cutting the 2×4 to go inside. Screw the side and bottom boards into 2×4. For the covers, you can repeat the process you used to make the bottom or attach the covers if you wish.

Color your box

Your box will become a lot more attractive if you dirty it. The process is quick and easy and is described below.

First select the work area and take the protective sheet. Use a brush to apply the stain and brush the wood grain in the right direction. Always keep the edges moist and apply as much stain as the wood can absorb.
